Grounds Around Town

Grounds Around Town is a program where participating businesses and organizations put aside used coffee grounds and make them available to the public.  People can then use this valuable nutrient in their gardens, yards and compost systems.  Your soil will reward you with lush plants and trees. Over 200 buckets are in circulation, diverting hundreds of pounds of organic waste from entering the landfill. In a landfill, organic waste such as coffee grounds generates methane gas (a powerful greenhouse gas) but used in a garden or compost system, the organic matter is a nutrient for the soil.

What is so great about used coffee grounds?
Used coffee grounds attract earthworms to your garden which aerate the soil, increase filtration and absorption and enrich the earth with their castings.  Analysis of coffee grounds shows that it contains magnesium, calcium, potassium, and other trace minerals.  Used coffee grounds make an excellent addition to a compost system and the worms absolutely love them.  Making worms happy makes your soil happy; happy soil means fewer store-bought fertilizers and pesticides.

Used coffee grounds are particularly good for:

  1. roses
  2. hydrangeas
  3. azaleas
  4. rhododendrons
  5. evergreens
  6. blueberries
  7. mushrooms
  8. carrots
  9. radishes
  10. gardenias
  11. camellias
  12. seed starting

Used coffee grounds are effective in discouraging the following from visiting your garden:

  1. slugs
  2. ants
  3. snails
  4. cats

What is wrong with coffee grounds going to the landfill?
Landfill space is getting scarcer and coffee grounds and other organic matter do not break down in a landfill environment.  In fact, organic matter in landfills creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.  By keeping them out of the landfill, coffee grounds become a contribution to a healthy environment.

How do I participate?
First, for $3, purchase a Grounds Around Town bucket.  Take this bucket to any participating business or organization and exchange your empty GAT bucket for a full one.  Bring your “black gold” home and use it for any of the reasons already mentioned and take a look at our website. When you have used up your supply, rinse out your bucket and put it in your car for the next trip.  You can stop at any of our pick-up locations when it is most convenient.  You decide how much and how often.
